The Big Three Cloud Computing vendors

In the global cloud computing industry, three companies are recognized as the dominant players, commonly referred to as the “Big Three” cloud providers.

  • These vendors—Amazon Web Services (AWS), Microsoft Azure, and Google Cloud Platform (GCP)—offer a broad range of services, including computing power, data storage, networking, databases, artificial intelligence (AI), analytics, and more.
  • They are leaders in both Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) and Platform as a Service (PaaS) markets, and they shape much of the innovation and competition in the cloud sector.

The current market leader is Amazon Web Services, a subsidiary of Amazon.com, Inc. It is the most mature cloud platform and offers a wide range of services to individual developers, small and large enterprises, and governments.

  • Launched: 2006 by Amazon.
  • Key Services:
    • EC2 (Elastic Compute Cloud): Provides scalable virtual servers for computing needs.
    • S3 (Simple Storage Service): Offers secure, scalable object storage.
    • RDS (Relational Database Service): Manages relational databases in the cloud.
    • Lambda: Enables serverless computing by running code without managing servers.
    • AI and machine learning services for advanced analytics and automation.
  • Strengths:
    • Holds the largest global market share in cloud computing.
    • Operates an extensive global infrastructure with multiple availability zones and regions worldwide.
    • Offers the widest variety of cloud services, tools, and solutions for developers, startups, and large enterprises.

Microsoft Azure is the second-largest cloud platform, but is growing faster than AWS with an annual growth rate of 46%.

  • Launched: 2010 by Microsoft.
  • Key Services:
    • Azure Virtual Machines: Provides on-demand, scalable computing resources.
    • Azure Blob Storage: Stores large amounts of unstructured data.
    • Azure SQL Database: Delivers a fully managed relational database service.
    • Azure AI: Offers cognitive services and machine learning capabilities.
    • Azure Kubernetes Service (AKS): Manages containerized applications.
  • Strengths:
    • Deep integration with Microsoft products such as Windows Server, Office 365, and Dynamics 365, making it appealing to businesses already in the Microsoft ecosystem.
    • Strong hybrid cloud capabilities, enabling organizations to use both on-premises and cloud resources efficiently.
    • A large and loyal enterprise customer base with strong compliance and security offerings.

Compared to AWS vs Azure, GCP is the smallest of the big three cloud providers.
That said, it is the fastest growing, with a 54% market share growth rate, The Register reports. The company expects the business to grow 20% in 2024.

  • Launched: 2008 by Google.
  • Key Services:
    • Compute Engine: Provides virtual machines for running workloads.
    • Cloud Storage: Offers scalable and secure object storage.
    • BigQuery: Specializes in fast, large-scale data analytics.
    • TensorFlow: An open-source machine learning framework developed by Google.
    • App Engine: Provides a platform for building and hosting applications without managing infrastructure.
  • Strengths:
    • Market leader in AI, machine learning, and big data analytics.
    • Competitive pricing models and flexible service options for different business needs.
    • Global network infrastructure with high-speed connectivity, benefiting from Google’s expertise in search and data processing.

Key Notes and Industry Impact

These three companies dominate the cloud industry, competing by:

  • Launching innovative technologies.
  • Expanding global data center networks.
  • Enhancing security, compliance, and disaster recovery features.
They also continually adapt to meet changing business needs, including multi-cloud strategies, hybrid cloud integration, and edge computing solutions.
