Types of Research

Research is a systematic and organized process of collecting, analyzing, and interpreting information in order to increase understanding, solve problems, or discover new facts.

Types of Research includes:

  • Basic Research
  • Applied Research

Basic research is conducted to gain a deeper understanding of fundamental principles and theories without any immediate practical application in mind. The main goal is to expand knowledge.

  • It is also know as Pure or Fundamental Research.

Key Characteristics:

  • Theoretical in nature
  • Not focused on solving real-world problems directly
  • Helps build a foundation for future applied research
  • Often done in universities and research institutes
  • May or may not lead to immediate commercial benefits

Examples:

  • Studying the properties of a new chemical element
  • Exploring the laws of motion in physics
  • Research on how memory works in the human brain
  • Investigating the behavior of black holes in space

Advantages:

  • Leads to the development of new theories
  • Enhances scientific knowledge base
  • Helps in educational development

Applied research is conducted to solve specific, practical problems using scientific methods. It is focused on real-world applications.

Key Characteristics:

  • Practical in nature
  • Aimed at solving particular issues
  • Often conducted in industries, businesses, and organizations
  • Can lead to the development of new technology, services, or products

Examples:

  • Developing a vaccine for a new disease
  • Creating a more efficient engine for vehicles
  • Designing user-friendly software for mobile apps
  • Studying methods to improve classroom learning outcomes

Advantages:

  • Directly benefits society
  • Solves immediate issues
  • Promotes innovation and development
  • Encourages partnerships between industry and academia
