Meaning of Data Communication

Data communications refers to the transfer of data between devices through a communication medium, such as cables, radio waves, or optical fibers.

  • The goal is to enable effective and efficient communication between two or more devices for various applications, from business processes to personal communication.

Data communication involves the transfer of data between devices or systems. For successful communication, several essential components must work together. Below are the key components:

  • Message: The information or data that needs to be communicated between devices or users is called as Message. Example: Text, images, audio, video, or a combination of these.
  • Sender: The device or user that initiates the communication by creating and sending the message is called as Sender. Example: A computer, smartphone, or sensor in an IoT system.
  • Receiver: The device or user that receives the transmitted message is called as Receiver. Example: A server, another computer, or a person reading an email.
  • Transmission Medium: The physical or logical path through which the message travels from sender to receiver. It can be Wired Media or Wireless Media.
  • Protocol: A set of rules and conventions that govern the format, transmission, and reception of data. Protocols ensure that devices with different architectures and software can communicate effectively by standardizing data formats and procedures.

Data communication can occur in different modes based on the direction and flow of data between devices.

The data communication is divided into three types:

1.) Simplex Communication:

Simplex communication is a mode of data transmission where data flows in only one direction from the sender to the receiver, with no capability for the receiver to send data back to the sender.

  • Example: A keyboard sends data to a monitor, but the monitor cannot send data back to the keyboard.

2.) Half Duplex communication:

Half-duplex communication is a mode of data transmission where data flows in both directions, but only one direction at a time. Devices take turns acting as sender and receiver.

  • Example: Walkie-talkies allow one person to speak at a time while the other listens.

3.) Full-duplex communication:

Full-duplex communication is a mode of data transmission where data flows in both directions simultaneously, allowing both devices to send and receive data at the same time.

  • Example: Telephone conversations allow both parties to speak and listen simultaneously.
